Beneath the Shahada is a horizontal white Arab sword, its tip pointing to the left, in the direction of the script. The symbolism is clear: Green is the traditional color of Islam and symbolizes peace, prosperity, growth and tolerance. The Shahada declares that the Kingdom was founded on Islam and that its constitution and identity are anchored in faith. The sword symbolizes justice, strength and security - the power that protects faith and defends the nation. It was added to underline the importance of the Shahada. The flag is manufactured with identical obverse and reverse sides so the Shahada always reads correctly from right to left from either side. The green is specified as Pantone 330 C, a deep emerald that has become synonymous with the Kingdom. Evolution: From Banners to National Flag The roots of the flag go back to 1727, to the First Saudi State founded by Imam Muhammad bin Saud in Diriyah. The banner was simple green cloth made of wool and silk, bearing the Shahada attached to a wooden pole, carried in battles as a reminder of the cause. 1727 - 1818 - First and Second Saudi States: The same green banner with the Shahada remained. The Second State under Imam Turki bin Abdullah adopted it to show continuity. 1902 - The Sword Appears: When King Abdulaziz recaptured Riyadh on 15 January 1902, he raised the banner of Tawhid. Soon after, two crossed swords were added above the Shahada to symbolize strength and justice during his unification campaigns. 1926 - 1937 - Standardization: After the conquest of Hejaz, the Shura Council approved official dimensions, 150 cm length by 100 cm width, and approved several official flags for the King, Crown Prince, Army and Navy. In 1937, King Abdulaziz approved Decision No. 50 that refined the design to one sword under the Shahada, instead of two crossed swords above it. 1973 - The Final Form: Under King Faisal, Saudi calligrapher Saleh bin Saad Al-Mansouf, known as the calligrapher of the Shahada, modernized the Thuluth script. A Royal Decree issued the Law of the Flag, fixing the design we know today. Saudi Flag Day is now celebrated annually on March 11, the day King Abdulaziz approved the flag specifications in 1937. Protocol and Reverence Because it bears the Shahada, the Saudi flag is treated with unique reverence. Saudi law prohibits lowering it to half-mast for mourning, prohibits printing it on disposable items, T-shirts or products that may be degraded, and requires that it never touch the ground or be used in an undignified way. When the flag becomes worn, it must be respectfully retired, not discarded. This respect is why the flag is a powerful symbol at global events - from the UN Headquarters in New York to the Olympics and the Formula 1 in Jeddah. It does not just represent a country; it represents a message of faith carried for nearly 300 years, from the mud walls of Diriyah to the vision of a modern G20 nation.
