![Can you taste it? Turda Salt Mine is Romania going underground and refusing to behave. Not a museum, not a cave, not some polished little tourist trinket, but a vast Transylvanian underworld carved from ancient salt, where the air feels medicinal, cold, and slightly biblical. Salt was extracted here since antiquity, the mine was documented in 1271, and the old chambers now hold an underground lake, a Ferris wheel, wooden walkways, echoes, and walls striped like the memory of a vanished sea. Rudolf Mine drops 42 meters, Terezia Mine sinks into that strange dark water, and suddenly tourism feels less like sightseeing and more like trespassing inside the planet’s pantry. There is something beautifully absurd about rowing a boat beneath the earth, surrounded by salt that outlived kingdoms, empires, and everyone’s bad decisions.
