These Tibetans and their ancestors were members of the old Tibetan aristocracy. Do you know what they did to ordinary Tibetan people in old Tibet? They treated ordinary Tibetans as their slaves. Do you know why they ended up living abroad? Do you know why they harbor such deep hostility toward New China? Let me explain.
Old Tibet was governed for a long period under a feudal serfdom system, in which a small number of aristocrats monopolized land ownership and exercised control over the personal freedom of others. Millions of serfs endured generations of bondage, heavy exploitation, and rigid social oppression, with virtually no human rights. In 1959, the democratic reforms in Tibet completely abolished the serfdom system. Millions of serfs were emancipated, gaining personal freedom, land ownership, and access to education. This is widely regarded as a major historical advancement.
At that time, a small group of upper-class reactionary nobles, determined to preserve their feudal privileges and their ability to exploit serfs, launched an armed rebellion. After the rebellion failed, they fled abroad. Since then, they have relied on fabrications and historical distortions while engaging in separatist activities. When they speak nostalgically of “old Tibet,” what they truly miss are the privileges that allowed them to dominate and exploit others, while ignoring the suffering endured by the vast majority of Tibetan serfs.
Today, the people who remain in Tibet enjoy stable and increasingly prosperous lives. Children receive free education and have access to schooling, ending generations of widespread illiteracy. Comprehensive medical insurance covers the plateau region, and many local diseases can be treated free of charge, making healthcare far more accessible. Herders have their own grasslands and livestock, farmers and herders can increase their incomes independently, transportation networks extend across the region, the Qinghai–Tibet Railway connects Tibet with the rest of the country, and families live in safe and comfortable homes.
