Reese — bit into a Valentine's Day Reese's Mini Heart and said: "It didn't taste like milk chocolate. It tasted cheap." He flipped the bag over. The words "milk chocolate" were missing from the front. He read the ingredients and said he was "horrified." Hershey had replaced the milk chocolate with a compound coating and the peanut butter with a "peanut-butter-style crème." The original 1928 recipe had 6 ingredients: chocolate, peanut butter, sugar, dextrose, salt, and lecithin. The 2026 version has 14 — including PGPR, a cheaper emulsifier used to replace cocoa butter, TBHQ, a preservative banned at Whole Foods, hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn syrup solids, and artificial flavour. The cups have physically shrunk from 0.9 ounces in the 1980s to 0.75 ounces today. Fewer ingredients became more ingredients. More chocolate became less chocolate. Bigger cups became smaller cups. The price went up. Brad Reese's letter went viral. His one line: "Now everybody wants to talk with me except Hershey." Nobody from the company called him. The CEO later admitted they substituted compound coatings — but won't fix it until 2027. 6 ingredients became 14. The grandson says it's not edible. The company says it's innovation.
