During the Islamic Golden Age and medieval periods, Kurdish dynasties flourished across the region, most notably the Marwanids in Upper Mesopotamia and the global superpower of the Ayyubid Empire, founded by Saladin, which united Egypt, Syria, and parts of the Hijaz in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the 18th century, the Zand Dynasty, founded by Karim Khan Zand, rose to rule a vast portion of Persia (modern-day Iran), establishing a period of peace and cultural renaissance.
