@nerdypriest: Replying to @initforthedonuts Do not accept the narrative going around that this is just about one persons personal preference for self-identification #progressiveclergy #christian #affirmingchristian #matthewvines #nyt
I, too, was comforted by certain things when I was 19 years old…that doesn’t mean I can’t mature into a new point of view if I find out those things were limiting or harmful.

Vines so badly wants to be accepted by the Evangelicalism establishment. He’s basically like Tim Scott in the GOP. They’ll use you but never accept you and give you what you want.

So he opens the article talking about gay marriage rights are eroding away… then explains how the term “queer” has a connotation of being politically adversarial against social norms…. And he isn’t connecting the two dots? That we live in a homophobic society and in order for gay people to be safe we need to be adverserial against homophobic cultural norms… ergo why queer exists. Like is he stupid? Like I’m sorry for using this language but how fucking stupid is he? Like did he not proofread the essay? Or is your interpretation overly charitable and he doesn’t actually understand the words he wrote?

as a bisexual person in a straight passing relationship with a pansexual person, I embrace the distinction from the norm that "queer" excetuates perfectly within the political implications and adversarial nature of the word. The word provides positive value to my life, and not just as a reclamation from the angrily sneered usage of the word by my grandmother. weird is wonderful, abnormal provides variety, diversity is valued, and queer is powerful!

I use queer because it’s easier than trying to explain myself since every part of my identity is contrary to societal norms.

i identify as queer, but I don't think basic rights, freedoms, and kindness are radical, I'm queer because other people think that's radical.

I don’t use queer to describe myself, I do use gay. But I’m also not eschewing queer altogether. If it’s used to collectively refer to a group that I’m part of, then I’m all for it.

So he’s currently comfortable because he’s cisgender, white, and has a greater foothold on individual rights than the rest of us queers? So to maintain that comfortability he’s willing to throw the rest of us down the drain? Good to know.

Too quickly we forget about the AIDS quilt, so that we're able to pretend that being gay isn't political.
This is horizontal hostility, which is as old as time. It's misplaced aggression inside our community, instead of doing the right thing and pointing out that the problems originate from outside our community.

I’ve started claiming myself as Queer rather than a member of the LGBT+ community. I see them as identical, but words matter. Thank you for your content!!

If someone is REALLY against the idea of identifying as queer and they’re under 50 I do give side eye. Like to each their own and I’m totally fine with not wanting to be referred to as queer but I will be at the very least questioning how involved in the community you are

I’m queer because, among other reasons, I’m biologically non binary. So his take is also kind of bio essentialist, and he’s kissing up to eugenicists. I’d rather not be erased. Queer is not just how I see myself, it’s also how society, medicine, religion etc see me. There’s no me without it. I’m neuro divergent & have other biological differences that make me “queer” as in not typical & erasing that is HATE SPEECh. Fuck the New York Times now & forever.

My teenager told me they're queer because they're still figuring out who they are but there are things they know. Like they know they are not straight & gender constructs are dumb. I did a little dance because I scored the queer child who felt safe enough to tell me.

I am asexual, and, sometimes, I prefer just saying that I am "queer" to avoid having to go into a long explanation of what asexuality means for me, and how I am just one part of that spectrum. It's also to avoid the exclusion or invalidation that can come with asexuality both inside and outside the alphabet mafia.

gay i view as a sexuality label among everything but queerness is a lifestyle. its about being left wing, revolutionary. you don't have to be in the LGBT community to be queer.
