Why do I immediately assume that if I add a bunch of extra letters to the end of a word, it magically sounds less rude? Like somehow “okayyyyy” is friendlier than “okay” and “sureeee” doesn’t sound nearly as threatening as “sure.” It feels like there’s this unspoken rule that every text message has to be carefully engineered so nobody accidentally thinks you’re upset with them. I’ll spend five minutes rewriting a three-word text just to make sure the vibe is right. The problem is you can’t hear someone’s tone through a screen, so suddenly punctuation, emojis, and random extra letters become a full-time job.
