the validation should give them a prize if they generate one that's already been used

The issue is not about storing an uuid if it has purpose other than asserting is unique, an uuid is unique because probability of collisions is astronomically low, and if you still thinking "but bad luck" you are not understanding what astronomically means.

I saw this get developed. merged user ids from apps that were acquired and had overlaps - as well as issues with ids that overflowed when app scaled beyond the convention used. emergency decision was to ban people from creating their own id generation and use a centrally managed service to end the dumb stuff.

given that this exists i can almost bet they have one shared log file where every service writes logs with some uid so that they can track what came from where

Imagine every single atom making up every single human being currently alive on Earth. If you assigned a hidden tag to just one single atom in that entire global mass, the odds of a developer randomly picking that exact atom on their first try is still millions of times more likely than a UUID collision

Tell me you don’t know how UUIDs are generated without telling me don’t know how UUIDs are generated.
