I couldn’t breathe. I knew I had to go to the hospital. We called my nurse and they booked an acute time. I was crying, because I knew what was waiting. Needles in my veins. Tubes in my lung and heart. Pain. Machines. Uncertainty. And those words: “You don’t have long left.” They drained a large amount of fluid from around my heart and lung. The empty space afterward was painful as it slowly filled with air. It felt like learning to breathe all over again, and in many ways, I still am. Hospitals can feel cold, frightening, and completely out of our control. I looked at Joe with tears in my eyes and said, “Can we make this into a ceremony?” So we brought what makes us feel safe. Healing instruments, a salt lamp, a gong, cacao, lavender and rose oils, sheepskin, anything that could turn a dull hospital room into a space that felt warm and alive. This was one of the most painful experiences of my life. I touched a fear so deep. I couldn’t breathe. It hurt so much. But I wasn’t alone. The nurses were angels. They held my hand and breathed with me through it. My family was there, bringing warmth, light, even moments of laughter. I prayed out loud many times a day while healing frequencies played softly on repeat from my speaker. And something unexpected happened. The hospital staff loved coming into the room. They would say “Wow… this feels relaxing.” Some even asked to try the gong. It changed the atmosphere for everyone. The first time I was admitted to the hospital, before my terminal cancer diagnosis, I was so frightened. I just wanted to go home. This time it felt strangely different. Leaving almost felt harder, because it had become a place where I felt safe. I want to share this to remind us that sacredness is not a place. It is something we can bring with us, even into the most clinical, frightening spaces. You can make a temple out of a hospital room. A safe haven in the midst of uncertainty. Turn the cold place into something that feels alive. Into something that holds you. The room was temporary. The ceremony was not. The love that filled it will stay with me. #stage4cancer #HealingJourney #cancersupport #sacredspace #hospital
