What we as Americans don’t understand is that they are “red” bricks. That apparently has some sort of magic that also is used in “Italian pizza ovens”. I guess the bricks ovens we have in America are different somehow?

It’s because everybody is getting thermal resistance and thermal mass confused. Brick has a high thermal mass, it easily absorbs and stores heat and slowly radiates it back out. It has a very low thermal resistance meaning it has very little capacity to prevent the transfer of heat through it. It’s a dog shit insulator. (It’s also bad at preventing moisture transfer making it a bad choice for humid environments, it’s why so many houses over there have mold problems) Brick on its own requires additional insulation, that’s why most brick in the us is just a facade. Also despite what they try to tell us most houses in the uk aren’t that old. Only 20% or so are pre-1919, most houses in the uk are post war and we knew this about brick then, better insulation existed then. If a building isn’t insulated, it’s because it was built cheaply. They’re not wrong, the brick does make it hotter. They’re just wrong for thinking that’s a desirable trait even in the winter anymore

they don't seem to understand that our homes also have insulation. or that we also have homes built similar to theirs & ac works here just fine

I saw one say their heat is unique in that it stays close to the ground. I didn't feel like arguing about the laws of thermodynamics and let them be.

I’ve been thinking this every time. They’re like brick houses trap heat. Okay I live in Texas and we also have brick houses and heat.

Their brick is magic and unique and only keeps heat in and can’t possibly be retrofitted for AC….

one of them told me i don’t understand because their house heats up when it’s hot during the day and it cools off at night when it’s cooler outside. that’s…just how walls work?

houses made of brick mean literally nothing. It’s a moot point when AC can just fix their problems. Brick or not.

We went out of town over Memorial Day weekend and because of a maintenance issue, our A/C was off all weekend. No windows and doors were opened, so when we left, it was around 65 in the house, and when we got back FIVE days later, it was around 73. Because once cooled, the insulation traps the cool in. Like all insulation. In the universe.

Not to mention they could’ve started building homes with ac in the 50’s like America did. And they still actively build homes without any central AC.

warmer places tend to avoid putting their windows in direct sunlight. the houses heat up bc of the windows. the main advice given during UK heatwaves is how to block your windows

My favorite is when they say people don't want to retrofit 100 year old houses for $15,000. almost like window units and portable AC units don't exist 😂

the amount of people that don't know that insulation works both ways is kind of astounding actually. it's JUST like a thermos, you put hot inside it keep hot inside for long time, but put cold inside it keep cold inside for long time.
