I pay my card in full every month and have an 820 score. You do not need to carry a balance and you shouldn’t unless you’re OK with paying exorbitant interest rates.

the balance at the statement closing date is what gets reported to the credit bureaus, not "your spending". so yes pay it down by statement close. (not the same as due date)
