I think that what's important here is that the reason why the word clicked for you is that you remembered that you had seen and heard that word before in a meaningful context. And a lot of the time when you're consuming input, the context isn't meaningful because either you're just not engaged with it or it is just completely beyond your understanding and you don't understand any of it. So I think it's important not to just passively consume content but actually really think about what you think is being said, what you think a word really means in a given context, because it's the thinking and the engagement that leads to these mental connections that lead to language acquisition, not merely consuming enough input.

i find a vocab word and imagine said thing in my mind and repeat the word out loud. sometimes it helps to imagine hiragana over the mental image. helps solidify most vocab
