Unless you're measuring twice, might I suggest screwing in the male end into the board first. Then set the board where you want it in between the 2x6s. Lay the female component over the male they way they normally fit and screw the male part to the 2x6s. Now the board is exactly where you want it to be, and not floating away from the back because you thought you could eyeball it just fine.
