The political stuff is real. My son visited a rich college friend who was living in China. The friend is a native of the PRC. My son, the American, had to provide his parents’ passport photos and infos etc. China’s police state creeped me out but I went along because it was a once-in-a-lifetime trip for my son. In Japan, things are less techy and downright primitive at times, even compared to the US. But it feels like a free country. Hong Kong is fine too. They let anyone in.

Culture and soft power matter. The image of anime, cosplay, sumo and geisha. Both countries have temples/shrines but many Japanese ones are new reconstructions. Geopolitics matters too. All that adds up to westerners kind of romanticizing or even fetishizing Japan.

The official figures from immigration offices are incorrect or mistaken, but in 2025, the number of foreign travelers entering China exceeded 60 million, and Japan saw 38 million.

Also if I make a major mistake and get in trouble I know there’ll be a fair process and my home country is friendly with Japan also unlike China

I had so much fun visiting China back in April! I went on my own (from Canada). It was easy to get around. I just learned some basic mandarin and relied on Google Translate when I went there.

For me, it’s human rights, people of Japan have far more freedom, mutual respect of each other and by their government, I feel like my tourism dollars are voting for a system and I don’t want to vote for the Chinese one party policy
