@anderssonli: We should not be sidetracked by discourse about a fragmented radical right. Academics often focus on categorisation, while political debates often circle around differences and levels of political acceptability. In order to understand their ideologies and the danger their increased support poses, especially to counter the growing tendency for cooperation with the far right among traditional right-wing parties, we need to understand the unifying core features of their ideology. All of these movements are anti-immigration and particularly anti-Muslim. They describe nations and people in an exclusive and hierarchical way, emphasising the unalterability and incompatibility of different cultures. Even though 'culture' is often rhetorically used instead of 'race', the logic of ranking and emphasizing incompatibility is essentially the same as in the 1930s. This means that they fundamentally disagree with the idea that all human beings are equal. With their exclusive and narrow definition of the 'nation', they strongly oppose diversity and policies that strengthen it. Like Trump and Putin, they argue that liberal values such as democracy and human rights are making Europe weak and morally decayed. Their rhetoric suggests that our societies are on the verge of collapse. Throughout the history of fascist movements, portraying contemporary societies as degenerate and fundamentally flawed has been a mobilisation tactic, intended to create a sense of urgency and alarm. They have also largely replaced a traditional class analysis based on material interests with identity-based politics. For them, subjectivity is based on hetero-patriarchal nationalism and their own perception of relevant social contribution, as well as countering lifestyles that they deem belonging to elites or 'others'. Resistance to climate policies is therefore another uniting factor within the far and extreme right. We must recognise the bigger picture of what is happening right now in many European countries where these forces are gaining ground. Thank you again to @autonomy_institute for organizing this inspiring event!
