Why would they have an iPad? That’s my first question you don’t know how to parent so you just hand them an iPad

Set a timer. They are to immediately hand the device to you when the timer goes off or they loose time off of their next session. An amount of time that is significant and they will not want to lose. And stand by that consequence!

My daughter never melted down about hers but my son did a couple times. When he did that we would tell him “you getting this upset about it tells us you aren’t ready to have it” and we would take it away completely for a couple months. When he asked for it back and we eventually gave it to him we would say “remember the rules, if you throw a fit when I tell you to give it back then you don’t get it anymore” That worked for us. He’s 13 now and I feel he has grown to be pretty good about not being attached to electronics all the time

These comments are not it… if you dont want tantrums and want them to hand it to you the boundaries has to be set firm BUT fair. i.e. it is absolutely unfair if they are supposed to hand over the ipad in the middle of an episode. So the boundary is they are allowed to watch 1 episode and they have to give it to you when they are finished. To help them set a visual timer 3mins before the episode ends and when that goes off you sit down with them and watch the end together and then turn it off when it’s done. Might still give tantrums at the beginning but itll get better over time. Also if yhey watch stuff that is far too long to watch a whole episode then another boundary needs to be there “today you can only watch x or x (which is only 10mins long).

You set firm boundaries and stick to them. (Assuming you don’t just get rid of the tablet completely) for example: my kids only get their tablets on the weekends and they have a screen time shut off around bedtime. When we first started enforcing it they would get upset but now they just know that’s the rules

Be very very strict with your schedule. They get this time to this time on this day. Be minimal. Make it a reward, not an expectation. If they want to earn their tablet time that day they need to do a chore, read for 20 minutes, and play outside for an hour first. Or whatever you want, but thats what my kids have to do for screen time.

You take it away with no questions allowed. Because you are the adult! Or at least I thought you were 🤔 Who’s in charge? Your kid? Good Luck 😳😂🤪

Timers work better than people give them credit for! “I’m setting a timer for x amount of time. When you hear it, we tech down.” They will absolutely hate it at first. Follow through. Let them have their fit. Acknowledge the frustration, acknowledge the annoyance. Acknowledge that they can feel all the feels- they still ain’t getting it back right now. Follow through with that consistently. Once they start to handle it better (and they will! It will get worse before it gets better), have them repeat the expectation. “What happens when we hear the timer?” Have them answer. Also tell them when they do get it back. “You’ll have it again, same time tomorrow.” Or “once we’ve gone over your school work together, you will get another 20 minutes. It’s not a no. It’s a not right now.” And be super consistent with that as well. Always follow through with those promises or they won’t believe you and continue being turds. Lastly, set that boundary and the standard that they are allowed to cry and whine when they are hurt physically or emotionally, but we do not cry to get our way. That is not proper communication when we are wanting something, or being told something we don’t like.

Yes they likely will act like life is over. It’s a literal addiction that has re-wired the brain. But there’s no ability to refuse - you just remotely turn it off.
