Aang getting to have his cake and eat it too with cosmic power and Katara really exposes just how much his arc is nerd gets the girl wish fulfillment of the writers

I’ve always felt similarly. Getting over a crush is almost a universal coming of age experience, and it’s not necessarily that there was no way Katara might have liked him back, but he needed to focus on his own life. His arc in the series felt like a kid failing a math test because he cant stop staring at rge girl he likes. He needed to at least grow enough to recognize letting go of his crush was not ‘letting go of Katara’, it was letting go of his entitlement. Aang never seemed to drop the concept of “i deserve her” and that ruins the ship for me. It never occurred to me to send Katara and Sokka back to the water tribe, but thats a fair point

I'll also add that Katara is technically a princess so they could have drawn it out into a political relationship of joining two nations. one with trust and loyalty.

Yes Katara is FAMILY, the energy from her towards Aang was always older sister. It was normal for Aang to develop a crush on her, but I agree it would’ve been more narratively satisfying and realistic for her to not reciprocate it and Aang matures from getting rejected and evolves his relationship with Katara to pure family.

Seriously, boys desperately need the lesson/example in media that they can the love of friends is a valid desirable kind of love and still BE friends with the person they had a crush on even when they don’t “get the girl.”

I love all of this, cause I agree, there needs to be nothing definite at the end of season 3. They are ultimately, still kids. BUT hear me out: Docks, everyone is saying goodbye. Zuko and Katara hug each other extra hard, maybe a cheek touch (a la crystal caves), then she leaves. The audience notices as she leaves that she isn't wearing her mother's necklace... then we cut to Zuko waving, as the ship leaves and we see a flash of blue: the necklace is on his wrist. It's a call back to season 1 but this time she gave it to him willingly, and instead of a way to tell her, it's a promise between them. Because she's coming back for that necklace, (and him😏) and he's saving a place for her at his side for when she is ready to accept it. Aang can notice and smile to himself but say nothing about it.

The only cartoon that does the "first crush" thing well is Gravity Falls, from what I remember

Agreed. ✨
I'd just have Katara in Zuko's room helping him. I'd prefer they age for a real love story to be written, especially for Aang; a better romance is built for him as he ages up.
Side note: I also think Katara and Zuko would have been the best parents.
Do you think Zuko would have ended up having more children with Katara?

The end of the series just felt (to me) like Katara was Aang’s “prize” for all he went through, as opposed to a genuine development of a relationship

I was never super attached to Zutara but even as a kid while it was airing I hated Kataang being canon. I didn't mind Aang's crush but it really did feel like he should've out grown it

You mirror my thoughts exactly! Yes, I agree with everything here! (I’d probably add Aang having a knowing look at Zuko & Katara hugging and him being happy for them.)

I love the points that you keep bringing up. I've thought about posting a couple of videos on the topic myself, especially as a psychology major. I also felt that Mai's character arc was underwritten. I wanted her to grow as a person and explore why she is the way she is, and learning emotional intelligence and vulnerability.

I really like Aang not choosing Katara too bc it’s a reminder that your relationships don’t need to be your entire world

This is not shade at all towards the show but genuinely if they had done that, the show would’ve actually been perfect in my eyes.

There is so much to be said regarding how the canon handled (or just outright abandoned) Aang's whole letting go of attachment arc. The way I interpret that arc is that Aang's attachment to Katara is a way for him to cope with the pain of having lost his people. This makes sense to me considering his core flaw is that he is avoidant.
I like a more ambiguous romance in the ending of B3, but with subtle signs that are budding between Zuko and Katara while each member of the Gaang sets out to doing their own thing. And to add on to that, I would love to see Aang having to spend an alone time with himself and process his grief more healthily. I'd love to see him explore the temples and have him come to terms with this reality.

I *hated* that they didn't make him explicitly choose cosmic energy over her. It was such a weird cop-out! and that's before I knew how ham-fisted they would be about making them kiss at the end

Also, your main character being alone at the end is powerful. It teaches kids that you don’t have to have a relationship to be a hero. You can be a hero and amazing on your own merits.

as a zutara shipper, I actually prefer the show ending the way it does and having katara eventually falling out of love by realizing the issues of being the avatar's girl. same with zuko, although the comics already do the thing. maybe it's because it's the kind of fic I consume so many other writers also follow up after the endgame and also take plots from the comics
- once around the sun by eleventy7 has a beautiful zutara rekindling with themes taken from the comics but made 10 times better. the MK breakup is really good in the fic
- refraction by caroes3725 (I'm currently reading it) is also a good one that follows canon with some changes starting in the air temples and eventually develops zutara while making katara aware of how aang has always seen her as this perfect thing
- from what I've tasted of desire by clementinejames plays with the southern raiders to build on zutara and has an amazing KA break up that to this day remains one of my absolute zutara post canon fics

YES! There a mature ways to have the storylines play out without all the love triangle drama that are realistic to actual life and how real people handle those situations. This is the best break down I’ve heard on the Zutara changes. Simple and minimal tweaks that change the end but not the ending.

I would also delete EIP from existence and have an episode of aang trying to regain the avatar state
