@nicoleballardini1: A question I get asked a lot! So I hope this helps🤍🤍Let me know if you have more questions or if you’re doing the same with your children?🥰
Incredible. I love languages but struggle when people talk back to me. What a wonderful skill for life you’ve shared with her!

that's so cool and very smart since kids can pick up languages a lot easier than adults

My mom is Spanish and French and my dad British and French, so my mom would speak Spanish to me and my dad would speak English and together we’d speak French. Today I’m fluent in all 3 languages and can also switch from one to another mid conversation

Love this, thanks for sharing! We have a 6month old Dutch/Italian 👶🏼 as well, growing up in Italy! We were actually thinking of adding English as our family language, but we’re a bit hesitant if it’s too much!

this is the best choice! i was raised with this method too : born in romania, my mom, friends etc all in romanian ; my belgian dad would only speak to me in french (and we’d also travel to french speaking countries and have quite a few french speaking friends and family members we’d stay in close contact with) and i went to a bilingual kindergarden (romanian/english) + most things we’d watch on TV were in english:) and this also made me very prone to learning other languages easily (i now also speak italian and dutch)!

Kids are sponges, also most of us in the Netherlands with mixed ethnic backgrounds speak 2-4 languages. It’s not a big deal.

I grew up speaking english, german and Portuguese. My parents also used the one parent, one language technic. Now i’m 18 and i can speak 4 languages fluently while being able to understand 2 others. The effort is definitely worth it!

I think exposure is key, so if she keeps living in NL her english and dutch will be fine by default and you will be the exposure of her Italian.

Our background: i am romanian, her dad is Egyptian and she studied in american school. I only spoke to her in romanian and her father arabic, she never mixed it and she speaks fluently in all 3 plus egyptian dialect. Then she chose at school german and spanish planning to to take the baccalaureate in English and Spanish. I am so proud of her. Kids are incredibly smart.

Thank you. We are doing exactly the same. However our daughter (18 months) is still non speaking but does understand in her target languages. But we do exactly the same. It’s so nice to read this as I don’t know anybody in my surroundings that does it this way. 🥰 Of course every kid is different but still it’s nice to know about other experiences ☺️

My parents did this and it works! Mom spoke to me in French, dad in German, grew up in the Netherlands (learnt Dutch through extracurriculars) and school was in English. I wanna do the same with my future kids

I am planning to do the same but find it hard since I mainly speak English these days. When its all 3 of you, you speak English right? Only 1:1 are in native language?

my bf is russian, i am croatian and we want to live in noray or sweden. So our children will have to learn 4 languages (English, Norwegian/Swedish, russian and croatian). I really dont know how we will manage that tbh

Definitely thinking of doing this! I was raised in a similar way: my mom always spoke to me in Catalan and my dad in Spanish, so I'm 100% bilingual. Since my husband is Galician (although he just speaks Galician with his dad), we'd love for our kid to be plurilingual too (catalan from me, Spanish from him and Galician from him and his grandpa, if possible). We'll see! Also, we watch almost everything in English at home so... maybe when he's a bit older we'll try that too 😅
