I’ve never liked Katniss’s mother because it seems to me she was worried about everyone except her oldest daughter who had to grow up too quickly. I understand that she lost her husband and then her youngest daughter but imagine what Katniss has to unpack?? Where is the consideration for her?

What’s even more wild is that it isn’t touched on enough that what grosses Katniss out the most in Gale and her’s interaction after the bomb is that he’s only upset that the bomb killed Prim, he doesn’t care about all the capital children who also died, and that kinda makes up her mind about him to tell him goodbye. This to me is crucial because in the books Katniss always humanizes the other side which is what seems to set her apart, her compassion.

I give a lot more grace to Astrid than gale bc I always assumed she's much more aware of katniss' animosity towards her and she distances herself for katniss' sake, not hers. I can't remember if it's implied or directly stated but her mother cares for her while she's in hospital and basically comatose. Once katniss wakes up, she pushes her mother away again, so asterid gives her space. I also think Astrid probably thinks her face makes katniss think of prim the way katniss' face reminded her of burdock, and she remembers how painful that was and tries to spare katniss that particular pain.

with asterid you follow the journey with katniss throughout the trilogy before prim is killed. you see her struggling to let her mother do things for her, her speech about not phasing out again before she leaves for the games the first time, and then their relationship improves a bit in district 13 too. but where asterid had an opportunity to make up for the years of neglect post-burdock dying, she doesn’t take it and leaves katniss alone with her grief AGAIN. when you decide to be a parent, you take on the full responsibility for your child and their emotions. katniss and prim should have come first, but they didn’t, and that’s the bottom line. so few people see katniss as the genuine child she is, including asterid💔

I have nothing but a burning hate for glae but Astrid I understand its not right an it will never be right but its understandable prim brought in the medical world shes why she was such a good healer or part of it least an she was killed doing what her mom showed her Astrid probably feels like she killed prim an not gale an his blending hate of the capital
