Literally NOT how it works. I have worked for TJ’s for 10 years/multiple locations. We simply hire very nice people, who enjoy helping others. We are encouraged to talk to customers at check out. It isn’t scripted or forced. We can absolutely not ask questions if that is the customer’s vibe. We recommend and complement the purchases because we also love the products. We taste most of the products ourselves so we can make recommendations. Most of us are foodies. We offer actual service. If you hate talking to people and don’t enjoy being around crew having fun, then shop elsewhere, or wear headphones in. I never force or fake a conversation.

i work at tj’s and beleive me they don’t train us to do this. we are free to talk or not talk and a lot of us will let the customer decide to start the engagement or politely stay silent

as an employee of T,J's, I never ask what they are doing the rest of the day. before I started working there I use to hate when they asked me that. I will have my own engagement and it's different for every customer. it might be what they are wearing, or their nails, or what the are cooking with a particular item, or the weather or even current events.
