Gboyega Adelaja is a Nigerian keyboardist, composer, and producer who came up through the Lagos session and touring circuit at its most fertile — a close confidant of Hugh Masekela, fresh from touring with him on the The Boy’s Doin’ It sessions in 1975 before returning to the studio to pursue his own vision. His music sits in the deep Lagos afro-funk tradition, shaped by the same milieu that produced BLO and the broader Afrobeat underground, but with a keyboard-forward sensibility that pushes it toward something more cosmic and American-influenced. “Colourful Environment” — recorded and released in 1979 on EMI Nigeria — is both a title track and a mission statement. Adelaja drops heavy Moog and Fender Rhodes science across the album, landing somewhere between Joe Sample and the afro-funk of BLO — lush, warm synth textures riding over a rhythm section that never loosens its grip. The session convenes a genuine all-stars lineup: Jake Sollo on guitars, Mike Odumusu of BLO and Osibisa on bass, and Gasper Lawal on percussion , each one bringing a different strand of the Lagos sound into a record that somehow holds it all together without straining. Original copies became so scarce they were reportedly trading second-hand for the price of return flights from London to Lagos before Livingstone Studios finally issued the first official reissue in 2018 — a holy grail that, once heard, makes the obsession entirely understandable. #cat #ino #inostrackoftheday #cats #djcat
