Lucas is 18 months old and walks on his tip toes. His mom brought him to us for an evaluation because he was constantly falling and bruising himself. Lucas has a retained Babinski Reflex. The Babinski Reflex is one of those early reflexes that reminds us just how incredible babies are from the very beginning. When you lightly stroke the bottom of a baby’s foot, their toes fan out and the big toe lifts. This reflex is perfectly normal and necessary in the first year of life, helping to ensure a baby’s nervous system is developing as it should. As a baby approaches 12 months, this reflex will start to fade away, replaced by more mature responses as their brain and nervous system grow stronger. If the Babinski Reflex doesn’t integrate by around 12 months, it can be a sign that something might not be developing as expected. While it can be worrying, early detection allows for timely interventions, which can make a significant difference in your child’s development. We are currently accepting new patients.
