POV: You’re kayaking in heavy fog… and the water starts breathing around you. At first I thought they were seals. Then one surfaced, and I saw the mouth. Not whales. Not fish. Something pale. Scarred. Ancient. Later I found a match in a buried oceanographic forum: Abyssal Maw Leviathan (Leviathan mandibula pelagica) — a deep-sea cetacean-like predator recorded only twice in the 1960s, believed to live below 2,000 meters where no light reaches. They’re not supposed to surface. But with ocean temperatures rising, their hunting range is shifting upward. They didn’t ram the kayak. They didn’t make a sound. They just circled… opening their jaws wide enough to swallow a seal whole. I don’t know why they let me leave. All I know is — I was completely surrounded, and the water never stopped moving.
