During a major heat wave, the exposed steel near the top of the Empire State Building can get much hotter than the air because it's in direct sunlight.
For example:
If the air temperature is 100°F (38°C), sunlit steel can reach about 140–170°F (60–77°C).
During an extreme heat wave with little wind, some dark metal surfaces can briefly exceed 180°F (82°C).
At those temperatures:
You could burn your skin in a few seconds by touching the metal.
Workers at the top wear protective gear and take precautions during very hot weather.
The exact temperature depends on the color of the metal, whether it's painted, how much direct sun it's getting, and how much wind is cooling it. At the very top of the building there's often more wind than at street level, which can help keep the steel somewhat cooler than it would otherwise
