Unfortunately, we often end up hurting our own feelings, not because others intend to hurt us but because we believe we mean more to them than we actually do. We build expectations quietly in our hearts, without ever realizing how heavy they become. We assume that the care we give will be returned in the same measure, that the effort we make will be noticed and that our presence holds the same value in their lives as theirs does in ours. But reality has a way of revealing truths we are not always ready to face. Not everyone feels as deeply as we do. Not everyone attaches meaning to moments, conversations or sacrifices in the same way. While we invest emotionally, some people remain distant, unaware or simply unwilling to meet us where we stand. The pain doesn’t come from them alone it comes from the expectations we place on them. It comes from hoping they will choose us the way we choose them, from believing our loyalty will inspire the same loyalty in return. When that doesn’t happen, it feels like rejection, even when no promise was ever made. This realization is heartbreaking, yet necessary. It teaches us to protect our hearts, to pause before giving too much, and to recognize that our worth does not depend on how much space we occupy in someone else’s life. Sometimes, we matter deeply but only to ourselves and that truth, as painful as it is, can also be freeing. Learning this doesn’t make us colder; it makes us wiser. It reminds us to give with intention, not expectation and to reserve our deepest care for those who show us, consistently, that we truly matter to them too.
