🎵 "Largo al factotum" - "Michael Spyres" 🎭 The stage is the Wolkenturm, in Grafenegg, Austria: an open-air steel shell in the middle of a park, home to the Sommernachtsgala broadcast on Austrian television. This is the June 2025 edition, and he wasn't alone on the bill: he shared the night with mezzo-soprano Siphokazi Molteno and with Rudolf Buchbinder. Fabien Gabel conducted, in the concert that marked his debut as music director of the house orchestra, the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich. The program ran through Strauss, through Gounod, through Puccini's "Turandot," and closed with Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance." ✨ Singing Figaro outdoors isn't the same as singing him inside an opera house. The aria is built from syllables stitched together at speed, and a closed hall bounces the sound back off the walls; outdoors, there's no wall at all. Every consonant has to come out whole from the singer alone, because the room isn't there to help build it. Watch the ends of the words: that's where the difference shows. 🎤 Michael Spyres was born in 1979 in Mansfield, Missouri, a small town in the middle of the United States, and went to Vienna to study singing. Today he splits an international career with the artistic direction of the Ozarks Lyric Opera, the company in the region where he grew up. It's an unusual path: the singer who tours the world's biggest theaters while keeping a foot in the opera house of his own hometown.
