The argument maintainance does make it safer. However, the stat 50% is pretty simple. Imagine losing the engine in solid IMC. You know you're in fog, so u may not break out at all. So in solid fog your chance of surviving go to nearly 0%. If you have a chance of breaking out, there's a 50% chance you'll have something landable in front of you. We have lots of people flying SE IMC in Germany, too. But not solid to the ground. Nobody here is bold enough to do that. And if one does do this regularly, it's just a matter of time before you do have to deal with that one in a lifetime engine failure in solid IMC. Do what you like, you have my blessing. Just make sure your students know how high the risk is you're taking 😉
