I lucked out. My Husband is an only child with divorced parents and they live in a different state. I don’t have to deal with any type of in laws, ever. 💓 it’s blissful.

Eh I disagree. I think it has more to do with the dynamic between mothers and sons. I think men are kind of forced to grow up and let go of their existing relationship with their parents more than women are and I think t hi d can create a mindset from the MIL that “he doesn’t talk to me anymore now that he’s married” when in reality it is a perfectly normal shift to have in a relationship between an adult son and his mother. I think moms have a hard time letting go! 🥺

When my boomer mother complains about my Gen Z sons partners, I gently try to explain to her that they are not my children. I did not raise them. I will not scold them. Or correct them. They are equals to me. Not insubordinate. My boomer parents have a hard time understanding that children grow up and they’re just adults with less experience. They need to be treated as such.

I think it’s also the fact that men operate differently than women. Women are competitive in nature for men — being ‘chosen’ is still prevalent for MIL with their sons (odd but true). FIL on the other hand truly just want respect from his SIL, and understand that his fatherly duty to her (provision and protection) now rests in the hands of his daughter’s husband

This is spot on for my marriage. His mom constantly passive aggressively tells him all these problems over and over again. She wants him to fix. We had a remembrance party on the day he told her not to plan anything. Then she got mad when he couldn’t stay and said “i need you there for support, you are my rock” she’s re-married. She has a husband.
