What makes for a boring evening? What mistakes do birds make? What is your most frightening talent?’ I lost count of how many passages I highlighted in this story, then sat staring at and pondering. What mistakes DO birds make? Our main character Sisilla, a nine-year-old Inuit chosen girl enhanced with brain implants known as niks, thinks about these and so many more as she prepares to undertake her secret task and then die shortly after as every other chosen Niffakoq has done. This story sits in the Venn diagram of horror and science fiction. Just when you are caught up in imagining the future science described, waves of horror hit you like a brick and don’t let up for chapters. I’ve read quite a bit of body horror, but this was a LOT. Definitely read triggers for this one because I struggled to get through some of it. If you are reading this for the horror, it’s probably going to be five stars for you; I was torn and went with four because parts were just so far over the top. Sisilla is one of the most captivating and intriguing characters I’ve read though; I found myself wishing this was a series in which she went on to have adventures in space. Even though the ending is what you might expect, the last bit was so satisfying. I listened to a lot of the audio narrated by Kimberly Woods, and it was so helpful to hear her pronounce all the Inuit names and words!
