the problem is that there is a different power differential between a sibling and a parent. he can never fight it out with you as with a sibling, and you will always be a parent who has the last say. I don't think it generalized well to interactions that are at an equal level.

This approach is wonderful! I grew up the middle of 6 kids and am now dating a man with an only child. It’s eye-opening how intentional you have to be at creating circumstances that require your only children to consider the needs of another.

We do this but quite calmly and kindly 😭my brother in law however does this but like a proper sibling does 😂he’s 28 arguing with a 4 year old and stealing stuff off her 😂😂it’s made her such a better all round child 😭

We intentionally made friends with another parent of an only and have play dates at LEAST once a week, and also sometimes will invite the other’s kid on mundane family outings. They practice skills like not getting their preferred seat in the car every time, not getting to pick the TV show, negotiating on snacks/lunch locations, etc.

As a mom of 3, it is glaringly obvious when we have an only child over to play who us raised knowing they are the center of the world vs not. I’d also encourage you to attend a friends or cousins sports event or concert! Boring or not we show up for people we love

You’ve got a deficit view of only children you’re trying to fix. Have you also got your eye on the things only children miss out on to minimise those negative effects? He isn’t broken he just has a different experience. Make sure there’s work on both sides. Be his siblings at the pool too, and the beach, and the park. Nothing is worse than “I’ll watch you”

I was an only child so ppl just assume I always got what I wanted- NO my parents made sure to humble me 😂 I’m glad they did.

I used to do that with my nanny kids. brother and sister. but they wanted me to sit and actually hang out and watch the movie with them. so we would take turns choosing the movie. always appropriate movie. but no I don't want to watch ponyo five days in a row etc

We do the same with picking meals, games and such. It's not always his choice. We rotate. Same with music in the car or podcast topics. We do the same when we travel, the way we spend our time is divided by our interests.
