@thestomachdoc: Don’t eat sunflower seeds with the shells. #Duet with @brigid ♡ The shell is made largely of cellulose, which your body can’t digest. If you eat enough sunflower seed shells, they can clump together and, in some cases, contribute to a fecal impaction or bowel blockage—especially if they’re eaten in large amounts or not chewed well. I’ve seen this happen in clinical practice, and it’s completely avoidable. Stick to shelled sunflower seeds instead. You’ll still get the protein, healthy fats, fiber, vitamin E, and minerals without the risk that comes from swallowing the indigestible shells. If you develop severe constipation, significant abdominal pain, vomiting, or you’re unable to pass stool or gas after eating sunflower seed shells, seek medical attention promptly.
