@growthmindsetparenting: The half step? That’s the feedback loop. The concrete behavioral response to succes or failure. We start with setup- set realistic expectations in a time specific window. We scaffold- we give them clear structure to facilitate success. We step back- yep. Do lessssss. Maybe some monitoring but the self monitoring is the goal. And we practice on repeat. It’s not magic. It’s repetition and expectations. #parentingtips #MiddleSchool #growthmindset #teenager #momlife

Brother we aren’t yelling because we think it will work. We are yelling because we also have executive dysfunction.

No one talks about how hard to teach executive function when you’re a parent who never learned executive function and you’re learning it together with your children.

I’ve found it’s helpful to have a laminated picture of what their room and bathroom look like when they’re clean to reference bc again, executive function. It really helps!!

This is why I got the digital calendar so they can click the tasks they’re supposed to do. They get stars for each task. And they can only get fun things if they have enough stars. If they don’t have enough stars, then oh well

Sounds great in a vacuum. But if they are 8 minutes late in the morning or don’t wake up until 7:30….guess who’s fucked getting to work 👌

I gave up the arguing & reminding, I have a word doc checklist template & print him a list every day, break down into steps, etc - it goes on his clipboard & he carries his clipboard, does his list with zero arguments (he’s 8)

I changed my morning routine from infuriating to cheerful. Giving my son the best start of the day. He has ADHD and time blindness. Identifying what was slowing him down was step one. Now I wake him up as sing-song happy as possible. Set a visual timer so he can see how much time he has to shower and get downstairs. Another timer downstairs that he uses to know how much time he has to get his breakfast and lunch ready. Toothbrush in main floor bath. No phones until everything is done. He hurries to get ready, so that he can have a few extra minutes on his phone before we leave. I sometimes prompt him: how much time left doesn’t your countdown say? Zero yelling. Works like a charm.

Parenting is exhausting. Love it, love them, but I’m mentally exhausted on the daily.

When I was a new teacher, the administration shared a great article that was a little funny/cheeky, but the point always stuck with me. Children are gamblers and will always act like gamblers. If you are inconsistent and don’t follow through with your consequence, they will test you every time, chasing the high of beating the “house”. It may take a little while, but if you focus on that consistency (and we know how hard it is when they wear you down and you are exhausted) eventually they learn that the house always wins.

Yes! the only thing I’ll add is modelling. Want your kids to put their shoes away? You need to consistently model the behaviour too, “see mommy put her shoes away? we all put our shoes away every day”

My 5 yr old started waking up and changing on her own and getting ready for school on her own. I just needed to do her hair. I cried when I saw her do that automatically. Now she helps her little sister. 😭😭😭😭

All four of us are neurodivergent. It’s a conscious effort absolutely. Every one is on a spectrum of ADHD with a sprinkle of autism. It’s never a dull moment here. ❤️😅
