6-12 months in an emergency fund is wayyyy too conservative imo. 3 months max in a HYSA then start hammering the Roth. Worse case you have 3 months to get your Roth contributions back. Also, your normal spending will reduce in a true emergency.

Soft disagree on step 3 and 4 ordering. The Roth IRA principle can be withdrawn without penalty at any time. So, it can serve as an auxiliary emergency fund in a true emergency like job loss. For this reason, maxing the roth IRA can serve dual purposes while building wealth but this only works cleanly for folks who aren't doing a back door roth.

Does the same strategy apply for 403b and Roth 403bs? Also my employer does a standard contribution regardless of my own contributions (which can be as low as 0%), so there’s no true “match” for me.

Disagree... people in this economy can not save 6-12 months of emergency money. Max out your Roth IRA first

So I can’t max anything…I’m paying student loans and I just don’t have enough leftover. I do have $10,000 in an emergency fund and have been toying with the idea of taking a chunk out of that to max out my Roth IRA this year. It took me 5 years to save $10k so I couldn’t be assured of maxing out the Roth IRA next year or ever again….

Disagree with maxing 401k. Way more tax advantaged to max HSA first.

After I pay off my car I’m going to split that between my Roth and emergency fund. I have such mixed feelings on which one to do, so I decided I will probably do both 😂
