He speaks of the haïk as a powerful instrument of anti-colonial resistance and a way to conceal weapons or information. Like shown in the movie “The Battle of Algiers” women would sometimes uncover themselves to pass through French checkpoints unnoticed while carrying weapons or messages. Conversely, they would put the haïk back on to conceal equipment. Fanon explains, that the coloniser, in this case the French colonial forces, targeted the haïk as a symbol of colonial resistance. The coloniser believed that to conquer and subdue Algerian society, he first had to conquer its women by removing their veil.
