Mount Moriah Cemetery is a historic rural cemetery located on the border of Philadelphia and Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Established in 1855, it grew into the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania, covering roughly 200 acres and containing more than 150,000 burials. Unlike many cemeteries of its era, Mount Moriah welcomed people from diverse backgrounds, including African Americans, Jewish, and Muslim communities, making it an important and inclusive burial ground for generations of families. The cemetery is also notable for its deep military history. It is part of the United States National Cemetery System and contains two federally maintained burial sections dating back to the American Civil War. The Soldiers’ Lot holds more than 400 burials, while the Naval Plot contains around 2,400 graves of U.S. Navy officers and sailors. In addition, Mount Moriah is the final resting place of veterans from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War, as well as numerous Medal of Honor recipients and other prominent historical figures. After closing in 2011 following the death of its final board member, the cemetery fell into severe neglect. Overgrown vegetation, illegal dumping, vandalism, and deteriorating monuments threatened the historic site for years. Community volunteers from the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery and the Mount Moriah Cemetery Preservation Corporation have since led restoration efforts, clearing brush, repairing structures, preserving historic graves, and working to ensure the cemetery remains a protected landmark for future generations. #pennsylvania #usa🇺🇸 - @dreelegend
