Nta...this was more of a mom fail than a stepdads fail. Mom could've waited until AFTER everyone left and just sat down and told her the books are fantasy and not real. WE wanted to give you a gift that brought you pure joy and WE hope you cherish that sweetheart. Would you like us to frame and hang it in your room?

NTA. Mom made it sound bad by saying her step dad was playing a joke on her. It wasn’t his intention at all. There was no way for him to know that she would take it to heart. Mom should have de-escalated. And hopefully the step dad sits the girl down and explain he wasn’t trying to be cruel or get her hopes up. That he didn’t realize she would think it would mean it’s real.

NTA, let a child be a child. Ideally by the age of 11 she should know HP is not real but if not let her enjoy for now. She will grow out of it soon…

i think it was a sweet idea, and could have kept it as memorabilia when she gets older. definitely not the AH it was nice that he got her a gift that was from something she loved at that age!

NTA, the kid should know a fictional book isn't real. The mum shouldn't have worded it the way she did either. She certainly didn't help the situation. I think it was a nice gift tbh.

My neurodivergent son 100% would’ve believed that was real at the age of 11. That being said when I see things like that happening in his life, I corrected him without shaming him. He is now 15 almost 16 and things like this still do happen to him.
