my parents always referred to whoever i would marry as “your sweetie” when i was growing up and now i am a lesbian with a nonbinary partner and feel SO grateful for that purposefully neutral language!

I think having consistent conversations with kids where you affirm their humanity is so important. I didn't start that when my kids were born so we purposefully introduce the ideas of different gender identities and family dynamics and love. Most of all affirming our desire to know them.

Do you mind if I ask if you gave them gender neutral names? And if so, did you have to consider how you spelt them to not assume a gender, too?

Thank you - I love this so much. As a parent of a non binary child and a child who is very firmly a girl, it’s so important to allow children this freedom of expression.

as a nonbinary person, my identity came from the concept of being perceived without knowing me, it felt like people looking at me and already knowing so much about me was too violating, and i really value that you’re fostering acceptance and open-kindness in that way

This kinda discussion gives me gender euphoria, I love it! Kids are humans and treating them as fully autonomous beings with agency over their lives is 100% the way to go! 🥰

i really wish this had been a common philosophy when i was growing up because i oscillated so wildly between extremes due to feeling the need to conform/rebel against my assigned gender. there was many a meltdown over my insistence or refusal to wear pants because i was uncomfortable with being a girl and didn’t have the language to explain it. it wasn’t until i got older and was exposed to the idea that i didn’t have to be one or the other that clothes finally felt like a neutral tool of expression instead of a weapon i had to wield. i felt so much crushing pressure to perform gender at such a young age that i have to commend you for doing your best to remove that pressure entirely, even if that’s not something most children struggle with.

There are so many actual issues in the world that should bother us..this is not one of them. I genuinely don’t understand how this could possibly bother another person. Beautiful family 🫶🏻

We’ve never done neutral, but we’ve talked about gender identity and letting them express themselves however they feel comfortable.

I love listening to you respectfully explain to people how and why you have made the parenting decisions that you have. Your sweet family is so intentional about all aspects of the child raising process. It’s beautiful to be lucky enough to witness through what you share. Thank you ♥️

I think what you’re doing is allowing the kids to, from birth to, understand their gender is about how they feel, not necessarily what their anatomy or society says. Which is setting them up to know who they are and allow themselves to evolve without the guilt and fear 🥰
