Its not that their salary expectations are unreasonable, the cost of college and the cost of living has gone up. People should expect to get a salary that covers their living cost.

Chief Human Resources Officer here. I see it all the time. College is too expensive for what companies are willing to pay. Students left with tremendous debt for their life. I would look into trade schools. Electrical. HVAC, Mechanics. Be your own boss so no one can fire you.

There needs to be a better connection between academics and industry. The schools are churning out applicants we don’t need with unrealistic expectations. Something needs to close the gap between what the workforce needs and education

This is where my sons got ahead going in the Navy! Got paid while getting a trade education and qualify for $0 down on a home loan. They gained experience from 19 on 👏

A lot of of this depends on your degree. If you’re getting a liberal arts degree, don’t expect to make too much right out of the gate. If you’re getting an engineering degree, you can expect to make a decent amount after college, assuming you are in the top half of your class.

I think this is on point but you're missing one piece. Companies expect you to have a degree and the skills but still want to pay you pennies. They won't hire those entry level positions to people without the degree. I think the trick is to be very focused in your job choices that are entry level while going to college so when you graduate you have work experience along with the degree. It's not one or the other.

The fact that college grads are being offered 30k is Insulting. I graduated college with a BS in computer science in 2005. My first job after graduating paid 40k, no experience except for school. Adjusted for inflation that would be about $68,397.75. So for a comparison, 40k today would have been equivalent to $23,392.58 in 2005. What a fucking joke.

My daughter did 4 unpaid internships in college while also working on weekends and night. Got offered multiple jobs from major companies on graduation. Today has the golden resume.

I'm not knocking down a a 6 figure salary, but a 6 figure salary today in comparison, 10 years ago, would only be a 71k salary.

I started at $34K 30 years ago (about $43K today), and I was ecstatic. After being poor all those years, I thought I’d won the lottery. We have to temper the expectations of the next generation.
