This is a true crime case from July 2018 in Montana involving a 5-month-old baby boy who was left in the woods. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending. Here is exactly what happened: ### The Incident A 32-year-old man named Francis Crowley was high on a combination of methamphetamine and bath salts when he crashed his car on a remote, abandoned road near Lolo Hot Springs, Montana. He had been left in charge of the 5-month-old infant (his nephew). After the crash, Crowley began walking with the baby but eventually abandoned him, burying the child face-down under a heavy pile of sticks, twigs, and debris because he claimed the baby had "gotten too heavy to carry." ### The Rescue When Crowley was arrested for creating a disturbance at a nearby campsite, he was highly disoriented and unable to tell police exactly where the baby was, only stating the child was "somewhere in the mountains." A massive search team composed of local, state, and federal law enforcement searched the dense forest for over six hours in pitch-black, 46°F (8°C) weather. At around 2:30 AM—roughly nine hours after the baby had been abandoned—a sheriff's deputy tracking through the brush heard a faint whimper and felt a stick crack under his boot. He looked down and discovered the baby face-down under a pile of sticks. ### The Aftermath * **The Baby:** Miraculously survived the ordeal. Despite wearing nothing but a wet, soiled onesie in the cold weather and coughing up small pieces of sticks on the way to the hospital, he only suffered dehydration, scrapes, and bruises. He made a full recovery and was placed into protective custody. * **Francis Crowley:** Broke down sobbing in court, claiming he loved the child. In 2019, he pled guilty to criminal endangerment and child criminal endangerment and was sentenced to **20 years in prison** (along with an additional consecutive federal firearms sentence later on).
