To be clear, they ABSOLUTELY used CGI in this movie. HOWEVER, it was used to supplement and enhance already practical effects and sets. CGI can be a fantastic tool when used correctly, and clearly that was the case here as well. AFAIK there were no green screens though, which is absolutely amazing.

I knew IMMEDIATELY that Rocky was a puppet. The movements weren’t smooth or “perfect” like how CGI does, they were jerky, more life-like. I LOVED this movie and the fact they used PRACTICAL effects is just magical

Actually Rocky is part CGI part puppet, some sets were too narrow for the entire team who controlled the puppet (5 people) to fit in. I attended a conference from the lead animator of Rocky who explained it all in detail

this is why early 2000s CGI was peak. they used actual sets, puppets, props, etc... then ENHANCED it with CGI. once they started using pure CG, it all went downhill

I love love love films that embrace practical effects, things like puppetry, light manipulation, costume and prop designers and creators. I personally believe the movies feel more real and more beautiful. don't get me wrong CGI and the advancements in visual effects have done wonders for the film industry and there are mad talented people out there. but there's also been advances in practical effects as well and seeing Hollywood experiment with those and bring them back is so exciting to see
