The robbers, using automatic rifles and wearing body armor, were initially impervious to police bullets, leading to a prolonged firefight on the streets that was broadcast live on TV. The event ended with both robbers dead, 12 police officers and 8 civilians wounded, and prompted major changes in police tactics and equipment, including the widespread adoption of rifles for patrol officers.
