Diet and Hydration
A rabbit’s digestive system is very delicate, making a proper diet essential to their health.
* Hay: This should make up about 80% of their diet. They need constant access to fresh Timothy, Orchard, or Meadow hay. Hay provides the necessary fiber to keep their gut moving and wears down their continuously growing teeth.
* Pellets: Provide a small amount of high-quality, plain pellets daily (about 1/4 cup per 5 lbs of body weight). Avoid colorful mix-ins that contain seeds or sugary bits.
* Vegetables: Introduce dark, leafy greens (like romaine lettuce, cilantro, or parsley) slowly. They should make up about 10-15% of the diet.
* Treats & Water: Fruits and carrots are high in sugar and should only be given as tiny occasional treats. Always provide fresh, clean water in a heavy ceramic bowl rather than a water bottle, as bottles can make it difficult for rabbits to drink enough.
Housing and Space
Rabbits are highly active and social, meaning confinement to a small cage can lead to obesity and depression.
* Enclosure: Set up a large playpen or a designated room rather than a standard cage. The space should include a secure "burrow" (like a cardboard box they can hide and chew on) and a cleanable area.
* Litter Box Training: Rabbits can be easily litter box trained using paper-based or natural, non-clumping litters. Tip: Putting a handful of hay directly into the litter box encourages them to use it.
* Free-Roam Time: Rabbits need at least 4 to 5 hours of supervised, out-of-cage exercise every day. Before letting them roam, thoroughly "bunny-proof" your space by taping up electrical cords, removing toxic plants, and blocking off low furniture they could get trapped under.
Health and Grooming
To keep your rabbit in peak condition, you will need to establish a consistent health and hygiene routine:
* Brushing: Regularly brush your rabbit to remove dead hair and prevent them from ingesting it during self-grooming, which can cause severe stomach blockages. Long-haired breeds require brushing multiple times a week.
* Nail Trimming: Their nails will need to be clipped approximately once a month.
