Dear Poultry farmer,
Twisted Neck in broiler chickens, commonly referred to as Torticollis or Wry Neck, can be caused by several diseases, with the most common ones being Newcastle Disease and Marek's Disease which are limited because they are viral infections.
Prevention is the key strategy, as there is no direct cure for these viral diseases. Both are viral infections that affect the nervous system of chickens.

Below are the Causes, Treatments, and Preventive measures for each.
🐓. Newcastle Disease (ND)
Cause:
Newcastle disease is caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV). It affects the respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems, and neck twisting is a sign of the neurological form of the disease.
Symptoms:
• Twisting of the neck (torticollis).
• Tremors.
• Difficulty in walking or paralysis.
• Respiratory issues (gasping, coughing).
• Drop in egg production (in layers).
Treatment:
• No Cure: Newcastle disease has no cure, and treatment is mainly focused on preventing secondary bacterial infections using antibiotics.
• Supportive Care: Provide adequate food and water. Keep the birds warm and hydrated.
Prevention:
• Vaccination: The most effective preventive measure is regular vaccination at different stages (such as live vaccines early on and booster shots as needed).
• Biosecurity: Implement strict biosecurity measures such as: 1.Limiting visitors to your poultry farm
2. Disinfecting equipment and clothing before entering the poultry area
3. Keeping the poultry house clean and well-ventilated

🐓. Marek's Disease
Cause:
Marek's disease is caused by a Herpesvirus that primarily affects the nerves and sometimes causes tumors in organs. Neck twisting happens due to nerve damage.
Symptoms:
• Twisting of the neck (torticollis).
• Paralysis of legs and wings.
• Weight loss.
• Tumors in various organs (in advanced cases).
Treatment:
• No Cure: There is no cure once a bird is infected with Marek’s disease.
Prevention:
• Vaccination: Chicks should be vaccinated within the first day of life to prevent Marek's disease.
• Hygiene: Since the virus spreads through feathers and dander, proper hygiene and biosecurity are crucial.
