@present.father: While I was speaking at the National Conference for Equal Shared Parenting, I asked the audience one question. “How many people in this room have had an order of protection placed against them?” The response caught me off guard. Hand after hand went up. These weren’t people looking for sympathy. They had traveled from all over the country because they believe children deserve meaningful relationships with both safe parents. They came to learn, collaborate, and fight for better outcomes for families. That moment reminded me that behind every statistic is a real person, a real family, and real children whose lives are affected by the decisions made in family court. We should always protect real victims. At the same time, we should never stop asking whether the system is working the way it was intended. Sometimes one question answers more than one question.
