@adytum_official: About 40–50% of people diagnosed with fibromyalgia have measurable small-fiber nerve damage on skin biopsy. In one study, 41% of fibromyalgia biopsies were diagnostic for small-fiber polyneuropathy vs 3% of controls; a meta-analysis of 20 studies (~900 patients) put small-fiber impairment near 49%. Caveats, because they matter: this isn’t all fibromyalgia, roughly half. Small-fiber neuropathy has many causes (some immune-mediated, some idiopathic), and a normal biopsy doesn’t rule fibromyalgia in or out. Skin punch biopsy (IENFD) is validated but not routinely offered. I’m not a doctor and this isn’t medical advice. Sources: Oaklander AL, et al. Pain. 2013. PMID 23811315. Grayston R, et al. rainbow.fawn :
there is a theory that fibromyalgia is small fiber neuropathy. the punch biopsy test isn’t super accurate however

Small fiber neuropathy is part of fibromyalgia, but it’s not an “either/or” diagnosis

The ‘can’t see it so it must be make believe’ conclusion is anti scientific and very frustrating

There’s also a study that says it may be caused via autoimmune disease that attacks (I believe) dorsal root ganglia in some patients so idk that made sense to me actually too

I have two different kinds of SFN and they only tested one side of my body. Should they test the other side that has different symptoms?

I had osteoarthritis…but my doc refused to believe me (because who gets OA at 31?) or do new imaging of my joints to prove I was right. I never actually had fibro.

Are there any studies showing fibromyalgia patients and high rates of false negative EMGs? I've never failed one even though I've had bilateral carpal tunnel twice and I have Myasthenia Gravis.

But they need to start studying the trauma-body connection!! I believe emotional trauma is a very big cause for fibromyalgia.

Hm. I wonder how many of the people with fibromyalgia diagnoses have hEDS. And then, is the fibro co-morbid, secondary, or a misdiagnosis?
