You came during the mildest summer we have had in decades 🥰 it’s usually well over 100 here by now. We are enjoying not cooking outside lol usually by now it’s 105-108 consistently until end of September. I think next week our summer weather kicks up to 105 😭

Welcome. Yeah California is mostly desert. The mountains you’re looking at are much taller than the ones in TN (the ones to the east have quite a lot of oaks for some greenery). If you’re a fan of country music then Bakersfield figures into that history prominently. Also Nu Metal was invented in Bakersfield in the 90s so that fits.

to the north east are the southern Sierra. to the south the transverse ranges. drive up to lake Isabella then over to the 395 North. mt Whitney. white mountains with the oldest trees on the planet. mammoth.

We don’t get a lot of rain so yes not a lot of greenery. Gotta come visit during spring time. This is the mountains you were seeing. This is a place called Windwolves and it’s about a 30 minute drive from Bakersfield.
