@absolutelydnb: Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious movement founded in 1974 by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The group combined Christian apocalyptic beliefs with science-fiction ideas. They believed their bodies were mere "containers" and that by renouncing worldly desires and dying, they would shed their physical forms to board an alien spacecraft and reach a higher level of existence.The group is primarily remembered for a tragic mass suicide in March 1997. Convinced that a spacecraft trailing the Hale-Bopp comet was their ticket to the "Next Level," 39 members in a Rancho Santa Fe, California, mansion ingested a lethal mixture of phenobarbital and alcohol.
