@thelemonadecast: Zohran Mamdani's pied-a-terre tax is a great start to taxing the rich #lemonadestand🍋 #lemonadestand #atrioc #dougdoug #zohranmamdani #newyorkcity #taxtherich
it's not even just second homes, it's second homes over a certain value, please specify that. it's for people whose second home is worth multi millions of dollars

Those second homes generate no extra revenue for the community, because the person doesn’t live there, so it really makes sense.

It also negates the "if we tax the rich, they'll just leave" argument, because those people already don't live there.

For further perspective, Rhode Island is not Taylor Swift's 2nd luxury home, it's her 8th! Ken Griffin's in NYC, is his 12th!

Interesting. I would consider this successful IF the funds go toward homeowner grants. We need to help the middle class to get into home ownership.

Rhode Island’s tax kicks in this quarter. It’s an extra $5k per million on houses over a million. It’s not horrendous and raises money off the summer crowd.

It makes me laugh when people try to argue the negatives to such a tax. Either the current owner is going to pay the extra tax, or the current owner will sell the property to someone who’s going to live in the city/state. There’s literally no downside for anyone other than the owner of the property

It's also if valued at OVER $5MILLION. This isn't like your aunt's lake house in Kentucky.

Mamdani creates a tax everyone can agree with that has precedent elsewhere.

This should also apply to owning apartments or homes that you hold vacant as a landlord.

But then when we say that landlords (who have MULTIPLE additional homes) should pay more taxes, THEN it's problematic?

Florida has the same it’s called Homestead if it’s your primary home you get a tax break if it’s your 2nd you pay more because you don’t get homestead exceptions

It’s homes worth insane amounts! It’s a tax on second homes worth over 5 million typically and it’s usually tax over a certain amount. It’s also progressive. A person who has a second home work like 500k they pay the same rate as someone on the first 5mil… it’s just on the money over that amount. It’s a very reasonable tax

We need progressive property tax rates with a 1000 sq ft primary residence exemption per person.

Property tax is the only form of wealth tax we have.
It's paid by people that use the infrastructure.
It's the fairest tax by far.

The key is they can use the revenue to subsidize building housing to offset the vacancy that the other house causes.
