I mean there are a few key reasons birthright citizenship is valuable. 1. It provides administrative clarity. Birthright citizenship makes it easy for a government to determine legal status, while avoiding an arbitrary and complex legal process that drains government funds. 2. Automatic citizenship provides a sense of belonging and increases civic engagement. 3. Birthright citizenship prevents a 2 tiered society where some people have all their rights, while others will be born in America, work in America, have families in America, but hold less basic rights than others. 4. It increases general tax revenue. 5. Immigrants, legal and illegal, commit crime at lower rates. Existing fears are purely imagined. 6. This ties to #3: The U.S. derives its sovereignty from the consent of the governed. If many people living in the U.S. who by all metrics are American don’t have many rights, the U.S.’ sovereignty is undermined.

Some European countries are considering birthright citizenship or other forms of eased citizenship paths cause, fun fact, having a second class of people in your country who have little to no path to citizenship is bad actually. Having a group of people who don’t want to buy into the system in which they live and who’s children will never consider themselves to be real members of their country ends up resulting in a stark lack of cultural assimilation and causes major social cleavages. Having immigrants who believe themselves to be American is actually a huge huge benefit to us

Imagine telling Japanese that they should be less Japanese and more black or Chinese. It’s ridiculous and defending this as the only country in the world doing this at scale is insane. Leftists are more and more less agreeable to moderates for this reason which applies to tons of topics. Insanity hearing the soccer story out loud
