@orbitexplainedtv: ๐จ There is a lake on Earth that once released an invisible cloud capable of silently suffocating thousands of people. On 21 August 1986, Lake Nyos in Cameroon experienced a rare natural disaster known as a limnic eruption. A massive amount of carbon dioxide burst from the deep lake and flowed through nearby valleys. ๐ซ๏ธ Because carbon dioxide is denser than air, it stayed close to the ground, pushing oxygen away as it spread. More than 1,700 people and thousands of animals lost their lives in one of the strangest natural disasters ever recorded. Today, scientists use special degassing pipes to slowly release the trapped gas, helping reduce the risk of it happening again.
